Why does UV light kill algae, but is part of plant grow lights?
This seems confusing that grow lights have full spectrum lighting, yet pond filters with UV lights kill algae. Seems contradictory. Can someone answer this? Thanks.
It's all in the dosage. UV light can be damaging to cell membranes, but the Earth has been awash in a sea of solar radiation -- which includes UV -- since the dawn of time. At normal levels, the UV rays will do some damage, but not usually enough to kill an organism. But, UV rays are also very energetic, so photosynthetic organisms can harness that energy by capturing the rays and converting their energy into sugar. UV also helps to warm cells, enabling them to carry out their chemical processes more efficiently. Additionally, the creation processes of certain chemical compounds, such as Vitamin D, are dependent on UV rays. This is why the UV light is included in these lights.
