Are Blue Heelers more likely to kill cats?
I know that dogs in general have a reputation for killing cats, but my question relates to pets owned by the same person.
I've grown attached to a Blue Heeler at the city pound (she was given up because she nips at the heels of children, which I only assumed was a sign of her breed, and because she attempted to bite a neighbor, but I don't know what led to it). She's very sweet to me, but she's also been acting timid because of the larger, louder dogs in the kennels around her.
So, is this an assumption of the breed, or does it actually happen more than it should? She's also not spayed--does spaying change the breed's attitude? I'm so tempted to adopt her, but I don't want to put my cat at risk.
While all dogs are individuals, I have known only a few Heelers that were safe around cats. They do tend to kill small animals. They simply cannot help but chase anything that moves, and when they catch it, they bite it. It's just what herding dogs do... The best way to find out is to intro the dog to a cat that is in a crate or safely protected and see what the dog does. If this is an adult dog, I would not take her home without cat testing her, and then DO NOT leave her unattended with your cat at any time. Spaying does not affect this behavior.
